In 2019, India experienced its largest uprising to date since independence in 1947. Why were the people who blocked a major traffic artery in Delhi with sit-in camps primarily Muslim women from lower castes? What has become of these so-called “Shaheen Bagh” protests, and what is the situation today? Britta Ohm, a political scientist and cultural anthropologist, researches assemblies, among other topics, and spoke with participants of the large demonstrations at the time under difficult conditions. In the podcast, Ohm talks about the decades-long ghettoization, surveillance, and exclusion of Muslims, and about the women who organized and led the fight for the right to citizenship – even though they had never left their homes alone before. It also covers the dangers and opportunities of social media, political prisoners, the caste system in South Asia, India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi, propaganda, and distortion of truth.
