‘Race’ does not exist as a biological reality, nor is it a legally recognized category in most European legal systems. Nevertheless, everyday practices continue to construct groups of people as ostensibly distinct based on alleged essential biological differences.In this seminar, we will examine the logics, mechanisms, contradictions and ambivalences of racialization processes in Europe. Students will engage with literature on various forms of racism (including cultural racism and anti-blackness) and explore the links between racialization and economic structures (such as racialized capitalism). The course also considers how racialization operates differently across European contexts both in metropolitan centers and peripheral regions (e.g. peripheral whiteness).
By analyzing racialization in diverse European settings and historical moments, students will gain analytical tools to critically trace how different structures of racialization and racism emerge in different historical conjunctures and shifting political, social, and economic conditions.
