Contents

The introductory lecture “Foundations of Cultural Anthropology/European Ethnology” provides conceptual foundational knowledge and offers an insight into the approaches and research questions of Cultural Anthropology/European Ethnology. The lecture conveys knowledge about the history of the discipline both in the German-speaking world and from a broader international perspective.
In the summer semester, the lecture introduces students to the history of cultural anthropology and its most important theoretical approaches of the 20th century (evolutionism, functionalism, cultural relativism, structuralism, social constructivism, postcolonialism, and the British Cultural Studies School). In addition, students are introduced to various thematic focal areas of Cultural Anthropology/European Ethnology, such as cultural heritage, narrative research, and humanitarianism.
Alongside positioning the discipline within the broader framework of cultural studies research fields, the winter part of the lecture series presents the central concepts of the discipline in the 21st century: culture, language, borders, identity, tradition, gender, everyday life, emotions, policies, and so on.
