Thank you for your interest in obtaining a doctorate at our institute.
If you would like to develop your own innovative doctoral project, we recommend that you contact a university lecturer authorized to supervise and accept doctorates at an early stage. Please ensure that the respective person’s specialist areas match your research project.

The following people are currently authorized to supervise doctorates in the subject of Cultural Studies/European Ethnology:

When submitting a supervision request, please include the following documents:

  • a short outline of your doctorate project (approx. 150–200 words)
  • a CV in tabular form

Please explain how the content of your research project relates to the existing research interests of your potential supervisor.

Ideally, you should clarify questions about possible forms of financial support, e.g. through fellowships or collaboration in projects, directly with your potential supervisor.

Current job vacancies in research projects can be found on our institute’s web page under “Job Vacancies” (https://stellenboerse.uni-mainz.de/#/jgu/jobs).

Anyone wishing to obtain a doctorate at JGU must first register as a doctoral candidate.
If you would also like to enroll as a doctoral student, you can indicate this directly in the registration application. Enrollment is also possible at a later date – i.e. even if you are already registered.

Detailed information on the doctoral degree assessment procedure and the formal requirements in the subject can be found here: https://www.studium.uni-mainz.de/en/your-application/doctorate/

When communicating with potential supervisors, you have the opportunity to apply for the Exposé fellowship from JGU: https://gshs.uni-mainz.de/en/research-proposal-scholarship/. This fellowship is aimed at doctoral candidates in the initial phase and offers financial support for the development of the research proposal and the search for suitable doctorate funding.
