Are you interested in other people, regardless of their origin and worldviews? Are you interested in a variety of cultural expressions in the past and present? Would you like to know what qualitative empirical research methods are? Are you keen to engage with cultural theories and current theoretical debates, while also exploring lesser-known European regions?
Cultural Anthropology/European Ethnology (KAEE), also known as Volkskunde or Empirical Cultural Studies in German-speaking countries, examines everyday life and perceptions of people in European societies in a globally networked world. It uses qualitative empirical methods such as interviews, field research, archival work, and source analysis to examine both the present and the past.
Here in Mainz, you can expect exciting focal points: research- and practice-oriented teaching, various subject traditions, and a collaboration with the subjects Film, Theater, and Media Studies (FTMK) that is unique in Germany. We place great emphasis on internationalization and have a focus on Southeast and Eastern Europe. You can look forward to local and regional teaching research projects. We are also passionate about better working conditions in academia.
If you would like more information about what the program of study “Cultural Anthropology/European Ethnology” has to offer and what qualifications you should have for a program of study, we would be happy to advise you personally and by appointment via email (academic advisory office, student advising office).

Would you like to do a master’s degree after your bachelor’s degree? Then find out here about the admission requirements, the orientation of the master’s degree program Cultural Anthropology/European Ethnology, and the career opportunities after graduation in a concise and compact form.
The MA programs of the FTMK Institute are consecutive master’s degrees, i.e. these programs build on the bachelor’s degree in terms of content. In consecutive programs of study, the master’s degree program does not count as a second degree.
The application for a master’s degree program is already possible if you have not yet completed your bachelor’s degree, but can already show 135 credits. If you would like to take advantage of this transition option, please seek advice from the student management. You should only consider this option if you can say with certainty that you will achieve your bachelor’s degree within the first academic semester in the master’s degree program (submission of the thesis, correction periods, oral final examination included). Further information on the general application modalities can be found in the interdisciplinary master’s examination regulations and the subject-specific examination regulations in the “Documents and Forms” section on the web page of the FTMK student advising office.
