What comes to mind when you think about ethnography? Is it a method that anthropologists and other social scientists use? Is it a genre of writing and (re)presentation? With its attention to detail and ability to not only describe everyday life but also serve as a basis for developing broader theoretical insights, ethnographic studies ground abstract ideas into everyday encounters and have the potential to question dominant conceptions of how people live and make meaning.
In this course we will specifically focus on the perspectives that (written) ethnographies related to queerness and disability provide on ways to be in and make sense of the world and ways to understand concepts such as embodiment, gender, sexuality, ethics, and belonging through ethnographic research. To that end, during this course we will engage in readings about ethnography as a method and a genre, read and discuss queer and disability/crip ethnographic texts coming from contexts around the world, and engage in writing ethnographically.
