After her Bachelor's degree in Ethnology and Anthropology at the University of Belgrade and her doctorate in Social Anthropology at the University of Manchester, she taught at the University of G\u00f6ttingen and the University of Regensburg. She was also a postdoctoral researcher at the Institute for Advanced Studies of the Central European University and Visiting Fellow at the Minda de Ginzburg Center for European Studies of <a href=\"https:\/\/ces.fas.harvard.edu\/people\/carna-brkovic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Harvard University.<\/a>  <\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p class=\"has-big-font-size\">Her work comprises a focus on inequalities, power, as well as social complexity and ambiguity. Her interest lies in the development of concepts that help to understand how people with different social statuses in Europe pursue their projects for a good life. <\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p class=\"has-big-font-size\">Her book \"<em>Realigning Humanitarianism in the Balkans. From Cold War Politics to Neoliberal Ethics <\/em>\" (<a href=\"https:\/\/iupress.org\/9780253075222\/realigning-humanitarianism-in-the-balkans\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/iupress.org\/9780253075222\/realigning-humanitarianism-in-the-balkans\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Indiana University Press 2026<\/a>) examines how the fall of socialism changed humanitarianism in the Balkan region, beginning with the work of the Yugoslav Red Cross within the Non-Aligned Movement in the 1970s and continuing with work in Montenegro by local organizations in a refugee camp between 2000 and 2018.  <\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p class=\"has-big-font-size\">She is the Principal Investigator of the <strong>ERC Consolidator<\/strong> Project titled&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/kultur.ftmk.uni-mainz.de\/en\/racial-socialism\/\">Racial Socialism. Racialization and Value in Socialist Red Cross Societies<\/a><\/em> (2026-2031).<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p class=\"has-big-font-size\">Between 2023 and 2025, she was a PI in a research project called <a href=\"https:\/\/chanse.org\/redigim\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Redistributive Imaginaries<\/em>,<\/a> which examined new redistributive imaginaries in Europe as part of a consortium of five European universities that has won <strong>CHANSE <\/strong>funding.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p class=\"has-big-font-size\">Her monograph <a href=\"https:\/\/www.berghahnbooks.com\/title\/BrkovicManaging\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Managing Ambiguity<\/em><\/a> (Berghahn 2017) is an ethnographic study of how neoliberal reforms in health and social care in Bosnia and Herzegovina promoted clientelism. The book shows how the neoliberal emphasis on local community and self-responsibility was translated into clientelistic modes of relating and vice versa. It also demonstrates ethnographically that some people were able to rise to official political positions by managing ambiguity between social welfare as a civil right and a personal gift.  <\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p class=\"has-big-font-size\">Prof. Dr. Brkovi\u0107 welcomes expressions of interest from potential doctoral candidates who are interested in what has happened to political imagination in Europe and elsewhere after the fall of socialism, especially in humanitarianism, activism, gender and sexuality.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n<!--
