While still working for film and television during her studies in Political Science and History, she began extensive field research in the 1990s on the globalization and commercialization of the television landscape, first in India and later in Turkey. By shifting the comparative focus from the 'West' to various postcolonial conditions, her work traced the rise of two distinct but structurally related populist movements – that of political (post-)Islam in Turkey and Hindutva ('Hindu-ness') in India – through the respective forms and conditions of production of what was then the most popular visual item. She completed her doctorate ('The Televised Community: Culture, Politics and the Market of Visual Representation in India') in 2007 in Comparative Cultural and Social Anthropology at Europa-Universität Frankfurt (Oder). The work examined the significance of transnational TV corporations for the naturalization of Hindu-nationalist politics in both journalism and entertainment programs (especially in series/soap operas). The politics of violence and conceptual and visual appropriation, as well as conflicting interpretative truth claims, were central moments in this process, which anticipated much of what we can currently observe in the West/in Europe.

<p class=\\"has-big-font-size\\">As PI in a subsequent research project ('The Meaning of Turkey: Narratives and Negotiations of the Islamic and the Secular on Commercial Turkish Television') at the Institute of Social Anthropology, University of Bern, she deepened aspects of genre theory, iconography, and questions of increasing media immediacy and post-representative popular power in the mediatization of a shifting public and political discourse with regard to 'Europe' as a diminishing point of reference.

<p class=\\"has-big-font-size\\">While continuously pursuing an interest in methods and theories of field research and ethnography (especially on questions of temporality), her recent work focuses on formations of rising global fascism and the (im)possibilities of communication, as well as digital activism/digital abstinence among minoritized/victimized groups in the context of internet politics and state-supported digitalization, hate speech, surveillance, and propaganda.

<p class=\\"has-big-font-size\\">As a member of the coordination committee of the Network for Good Work in Academia, another pillar of her work addresses questions of structural precarity, legality, knowledge production, and academic freedom, specifically in the German but also in the international academic context.

<p class=\\"has-big-font-size\\">She has published and presented her work extensively and received numerous scholarships and grants;
