Münster/New York: Waxmann Münster/New York: Waxmann; with numerous illustrations and a documentary film for download.

Content: Forst an der Weinstraße – the town in the Palatinate is primarily known for its white wines. Furthermore – apart from the interruption caused by the pandemic – the Hanselfingerhut Game is performed in Forst every year before Easter. The custom gained national recognition when it was included in the UNESCO “National Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage” in 2016. As part of a research project, the local custom practice was documented with film cameras, and the genesis of the custom as well as its cultural-political negotiation were analyzed from a cultural studies perspective. While the ethnographic film “Schwarze Küsse, Weißweinschorle” (48 minutes; download link in the book) portrays the people who prepare and perform the custom, the focus of the written discussion is on a cultural-historical reconstruction of the origin narrative, as it is maintained in Forst, reproduced by the media, and, in the context of the cultural heritage designation, also ennobled by the German UNESCO Commission. The micro-analysis refers to larger temporal, spatial, and social contexts and makes them understandable using the case study of Forst. The reconstruction shows which actors were involved in the development of the custom since the late 19th century and which influencing factors promoted the development of the custom complex.

More information about the book

Open Access Articles

Gutenberg Open

Academia.edu

</jgu-base-accordionitem>

<jgu-base-accordionitem react-props="{"title":"Research Projects","init":false,"slug":"research-projects","align":"wide","customSlug":false}">

BMLEH Joint Project “Intangible Cultural Heritage in Rural Areas” (IKEL) (2023 to 2026)

<jgu-base-collapsiblearea class="is-layout-flow wp-block-jgu-collapsible-area-is-layout-flow" react-props="{"visibleLines":5,"collapse":"always","collapsedHeight":150,"content":"

Cultural Heritage – what then? In 2013, Germany acceded to the UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage. Over the past ten years, nationwide structures for its concrete implementation, such as the \\"National Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage,\\" have been created. But what does the inclusion of a form of Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) in the national list mean for the bearer communities, but also for the cultural heritage itself? What significance does ICH acquire for a region after its appointment? And: To what extent does ICH have the potential to contribute to the vitality and sustainable development of rural-peripheral areas? These and other questions are addressed by the collaborative research project \\"Intangible Cultural Heritage in Rural Areas\\" (IKEL) of the Universities of Regensburg and Mainz. It is funded from 2023 to 2026 by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Regional Identity within the framework of the \\"Factor K\\" funding line.

<a href=\\"https://ikelprojekt.wordpress.com/\\">To the project homepage

","className":"alignwide "}"></jgu-base-collapsiblearea>

„Das Hanselfingerhut-Spiel in Forst. The results of the archival research and evaluations of interviews with

contemporary witnesses are now documented in a book publication. For a period of almost two months (October 9 to November 22, 2020), selected photographs were also presented to the public as part of an exhibition at the City Historical Museum Mainz.

In his photographs, Viktor Brüchert dedicated himself in various ways to Mainz city life. For example, he captured different stages of old town renovation as well as youth and subcultural events such as beat events in the 1960s. Larger socio-political themes are reflected in his photographs of a May 1st rally, the \\"Day of the Foreign Citizen,\\" or the Mini-Press Fair in 1979, a forum for alternative publishing and lifestyles outside the mainstream. The photos also provide insights into the tension between festivals, urban everyday life, and everyday problems (keyword: lack of preschool places). Viktor Brüchert's photographs thus offer an insightful look at various developments, at the everyday and forgotten aspects of the Rhineland-Palatinate state capital in these decades.

The publication resulting from the project work, \\"Point of View – Mainz 1960 to 1980 in the Photographs of Viktor Brüchert\\" – also a special issue of the journal European Ethnology in Rhineland-Palatinate – honors the photographer's work. Many of his works are made accessible to an interested public and placed into the contemporary historical and socio-cultural contexts. The compilation of themes paints a picture of Viktor Brüchert's photographic work, which, in addition to his enjoyment of picaresque self-staging, primarily shows his interest in the events in his immediate social environment and his everyday cultural world. The close coupling of biographical experience and photographed subjects is clearly evident in the chosen selection of themes. The 276-page publication offers, in addition to numerous illustrations, an introduction to the cultural-anthropological approach to the photographic estate, as well as 28 texts by the project participants on various topics. Furthermore – apart from the interruption caused by the pandemic – the Hanselfingerhut Game is performed in Forst every year before Easter. The custom gained national recognition when it was included in the UNESCO "National Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage" in 2016. As part of a research project, the local custom practice was documented with film cameras, and the genesis of the custom as well as its cultural-political negotiation were analyzed from a cultural studies perspective. While the ethnographic film "Schwarze Küsse, Weißweinschorle" (48 minutes; download link in the book) portrays the people who prepare and perform the custom, the focus of the written discussion is on a cultural-historical reconstruction of the origin narrative, as it is maintained in Forst, reproduced by the media, and, in the context of the cultural heritage designation, also ennobled by the German UNESCO Commission.

BMLEH Joint Project "Intangible Cultural Heritage in Rural Areas" (IKEL) (2023 to 2026)

Cultural Heritage – what then? In 2013, Germany acceded to the UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage. Over the past ten years, nationwide structures for its concrete implementation, such as the "National Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage," have been created. These and other questions are addressed by the collaborative research project "Intangible Cultural Heritage in Rural Areas" (IKEL) of the Universities of Regensburg and Mainz. It is funded from 2023 to 2026 by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Regional Identity within the framework of the "Factor K" funding line.

To the project homepage

„Das Hanselfingerhut-Spiel in Forst. The results of the archival research and evaluations of interviews with

contemporary witnesses are now documented in a book publication. For a period of almost two months (October 9 to November 22, 2020), selected photographs were also presented to the public as part of an exhibition at the City Historical Museum Mainz.

In his photographs, Viktor Brüchert dedicated himself in various ways to Mainz city life. For example, he captured different stages of old town renovation as well as youth and subcultural events such as beat events in the 1960s. Larger socio-political themes are reflected in his photographs of a May 1st rally, the "Day of the Foreign Citizen," or the Mini-Press Fair in 1979, a forum for alternative publishing and lifestyles outside the mainstream.

The publication resulting from the project work, "Point of View – Mainz 1960 to 1980 in the Photographs of Viktor Brüchert" – also a special issue of the journal European Ethnology in Rhineland-Palatinate – honors the photographer's work. These individual themes are summarised in eight thematic focus areas, each preceded by a short overview text. This way – as the project group hopes – a meaningful selection is made and arranged in a tableau that adequately represents the photographer's person, his photos, their creation period, and his hometown Mainz.
