Many of the seminars offer a good selection of topics, so there is something for everyone. My current favorite has been “Disparate Europes: Coloniality of Power, Hierarchies, and Marginal Perspectives from the East,” a seminar in English in which several Erasmus+ students participated and from which I learned a lot simply through the different perspectives that were presented. But the content, too, which offered different perspectives on the “concept of Europe,” repeatedly challenged my way of thinking in a positive way and made me reflect. In another seminar on the topic of memory culture, we traveled to Zagreb for a week-long excursion and, together with other local students, explored a wide range of topics with a focus on Croatia/Yugoslavia from different perspectives.<br><br>What made my studies very enjoyable were my two Erasmus+ semesters. Since the subject area has many partnerships in Eastern Europe, I was “forced” to choose rather atypical countries. But that's exactly what made it so appealing to me, as I encountered people and narratives in Slovenia and Estonia that sparked new interests in me and, of course, led to new friendships. As discussed at the outset, my course credits were also fully recognised upon my return.<br><br>Another point that I consider very important is that the Master's programme in Cultural Studies is a fairly small program. This gives you the opportunity to work closely with the lecturers and receive excellent supervision for your work if you wish.",
    "subline": "Laura Kleespies, MA student",
    "useBackground": true,
    "fullWithImage": true,
    "align": "wide",
    "enableVideo": false,
    "video": {
        "provider": "youtube",
        "id": "",
        "poster": ""
    },
    "title": "",
    "buttonText": "Play Video",
    "displayType": "row",
    "color": "red",
    "background": "bg-light",
    "bigZitat": false
}"></jgu-base-testimonial>

<jgu-base-heading react-props="{
    "tags": {
        "htmlTag": "h2",
        "classTag": "",
        "tag": "h2"
    },
    "heading": "Why Mainz?",
    "textAlign": "left",
    "anchor": "",
    "index": "",
    "color": "red"
}"></jgu-base-heading>

Mainz is a vibrant, multicultural, working-class city with strong traditions yet an open embrace of newcomers. As one of the Hochburgen of the German Karneval/Fastnacht/Fasching season, Mainz is busy with festival activity from November to February, culminating in the famous Rosenmontag parade, where politics meets tradition meets fun. Beyond this period of intense doughnut consumption and troupes of jesters running around town, the city is dotted with hubs of student activity and offers a wide range of entertainment and dining, uncommon in many other “student cities”.

The city is also surrounded by beautiful nature, from the Rhine, which serves as the border between Rhineland-Palatinate and Hesse, to the Mainzer Sand, Lennebergwald, the vineyards of Rheinhessen or the various parks scattered across Mainz. Winter sports are also available further afield at the Großer Feldberg in the Taunus Mountains, while swimming pools and saunas are open year-round in the city and nearby (in Ingelheim, Budenheim, Wiesbaden, Hofheim or Bad Homburg, just to name a few). The University also maintains sport facilities available to students at no or low cost, directly on campus.

Mainz also hosts numerous associations (Vereine), catering to every special interest you might have. From the annual Fastnacht celebrations to the Saturday Marktfrühstück, Johannisnacht and more, Mainz has much to offer to its ever-growing student population. The Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz is also rare in Germany for having a core campus, located up the hill from the central railway station.
