Inhalt

This seminar examines the contemporary far right from the perspective of cultural studies, anthropology, and media studies. Instead of treating the far right only as a matter of parties, elections, or extremist violence, we will ask how far-right worldviews become embedded in everyday life: in media practices, communities, leisure activities, gender norms, family ideals, and aesthetics.
A central focus of the course lies on the everyday lives of far-right communities. We will explore how such communities offer their members more than political ideology: they provide moral narratives, emotional attachments, social recognition, ethical frameworks, and visions of a “proper” life. How do far-right actors imagine order, virtue, loyalty, nation, gender, authority, and community? How do they present themselves as activists, influencers, intellectuals, victims, rebels, patriots, or defenders of alleged “common sense”?
The course pays particular attention to the cultural forms through which far-right politics becomes attractive and ordinary: memes, podcasts, lifestyle advice, social media platforms, protest events, rituals, and community-building practices. At the same time, we will analyze how anti-egalitarian ideologies, racism, antifeminism, and authoritarian fantasies are normalized through these forms. Throughout the semester, students will learn to critically analyze far-right lifeworlds and the role of these lifeworlds in far-right political projects.
