Mainz's Reading group on postsocialist imagination (RGPI) is a place for discussing anthropological works that examine emergent forms of political imagination. Understanding postsocialism as a global condition, we are interested in books that help us think through the ongoing ideological fractures and shifts of neoliberal commonsense in Europe and worldwide. We meet once a month to read ethnographies that empirically explore how people experiment with political and other kinds of imagination, including various real utopias, critical re-examinations of socialist heritage, projects of reimagining socialism for the future, grassroots and transnational alliances, and so on.
The RGPI is also a place to consider problems that theorizing the “Global Easts” has posed for cultural anthropology.
Geographically, we are interested in ethnographies of Germany, Southeast Europe/the Balkans, and Central and Eastern Europe, as well as in conversations across geographies with China, Cuba, Latin America, and so on.
The RGPI is premised on an assumption that thinking is a form of conversation, and that conversing is more productive and interesting when done together in a diverse group. We aim to actively ignore hierarchies between various kinds of centers and peripheries and generate an atmosphere in which exciting intellectual conversations can be pursued in diverse directions.

Die Lesegruppe zur postsocialistischen Imagination (LGPI) in Mainz ist ein Ort, an dem kulturanthropologische Werke diskutiert werden, die aufkommende Formen politischer Imagination untersuchen. Da wir Postsocialismus als globale Bedingung verstehen, interessieren wir uns für Bücher, die uns helfen, die anhaltenden ideologischen Brüche und Verschiebungen des neoliberalen Common Sense in Europa und der Welt zu reflektieren. Wir treffen uns einmal im Monat, um Ethnographien zu lesen, die empirisch untersuchen, wie Menschen mit politischer und anderer Art von Imagination experimentieren, einschließlich verschiedener realer Utopien, kritischer Neubewertungen des sozialistischen Erbes, Projekten zur Neugestaltung des Sozialismus für die Zukunft, grassroots-Bewegungen, transnationalen Allianzen usw.
Die LGPI ist auch ein Ort, um die Probleme zu diskutieren, die die Theoretisierung der "Global Easts" für Kulturanthropologie ergeben.
Geografisch gesehen interessieren wir uns für Ethnographien aus Deutschland, Südosteuropa/den Balkanländern und Zentral- und Osteuropa sowie für Gespräche über geografische Grenzen hinweg mit China, Kuba, Lateinamerika und so weiter.
Die LGPI basiert auf der Annahme, dass Denken eine Form des Gesprächs ist und dass Gespräche produktiver und interessanter sind, wenn sie in einer vielfältigen Gruppe geführt werden. Wir zielen darauf ab, Hierarchien zwischen verschiedenen Arten von Zentren und Peripherien aktiv zu ignorieren und eine Atmosphäre zu schaffen, in der spannende intellektuelle Gespräche in verschiedene Richtungen geführt werden.
