What does “Europe” stand for, and what does it obscure? What is considered European, and what is relegated to the constitutive outside of the “idea of Europe”? How do idealised images of European integration relate to the notion of “Fortress Europe” and the emergence of physical and symbolic walls? How does Europe appear when viewed from its liminal edges? This seminar critically engages with these questions, examining the cultural, political, and historical constructions of “Europe” as an elusive geographical and ideological entity with contested borders.Through interdisciplinary readings and discussions, we will explore how Europe was invented and defined in relation to its perceived “others” and how these boundaries are maintained, challenged, or reimagined. Focusing on global racialised and gendered categories of “Europeanness”, the coloniality of power, transregional entanglements, and hierarchies of belonging, this seminar seeks to unlearn received notions of Europe as an unmarked category or a singular, unified entity. Instead, drawing on critical perspectives and thinking “otherwise”, we will examine Europe from its margins, particularly its Eastern periphery, and in the context of East-West mobility, discussing the temporal coexistence of multiple, unequally positioned Europes.
