The kitchen as “heart of the home” is a space where not only food preparation, cooking and eating take place – the kitchen also allows space for conversation and discussion or even fight and crisis. Decisions are made at kitchen tables and narratives often derive from the kitchen’s circle of chairs. Kitchen utensils, machines and furniture shape our social and cultural behavior. How do people position themselves in the kitchen? How have the functions of the kitchen changed over times? How has technology influenced not only how we work and live but also how we define our lifestyles and habits related to our kitchen practices and cooking habits? Exemplarily, we will take a deeper look into the model of the “Frankfurt Kitchen” which we will also explore during a field trip.Please note that all text readings, seminar sessions and student presentations will be in English. The oral exam (Modulabschlussprüfung) may be taken in English or German.
