Inhalt
This course introduces students to cultural anthropological studies of refugee camps. It looks at ethnographic and historical accounts of particular refugee camps throughout the world, with an aim to situate this architectural-political form of managing displacement into the history of nation-state system. The course includes three segments. First part, “Nation-State and its Refugee Camps”, introduces students to Agamben’s philosophical reading of camps and its critiques. Students will learn about the role of refugee camps in the maintenance of the “national order of things” (Malkki) on a global level. In the second part, “Everyday Life in a Refugee Camp”, we will read ethnographic works that illustrate everyday experiences in a refugee camp. Students will have an opportunity to learn about what daily life has been like in refugee camps in Eastern Europe and former Yugoslav countries, as well as in the various types of reception centres in Germany. In the third part, “Asylum”, we will consider in what way asylum (-seeking) might present a ‘form of life’ (Fassin), rather than a legal or a political status. We will also look at the ethnographic accounts about how emotions and compassion intertwine with and even maintain European border regime.By the end of the course, students will learn how to analytically approach refugee camps as an urban formation from an historical and cultural anthropological perspective, as well as how to critically investigate what everyday life in an asylum looks like.
Furthermore, during this course, students will have an opportunity to participate in the Anglo-American style of (under)graduate seminars and to practice their skills of reading, writing, and presenting in English.
