Inhalt

The kitchen as “heart of the home” is a space where not only food preparation, cooking and eating take place – the kitchen also allows space for conversation and discussion or even fight and crisis. Decisions are made at kitchen tables and narratives often derive from the kitchen’s circle of chairs. We will look at the center of the household in different geographical and domestic spheres, entering kitchens of houses, flats, or student dormitories. Kitchen utensils, machines and furniture shape our social and cultural behavior. How do people position themselves in the kitchen? How have the functions of the kitchen changed over times? How has technology influenced not only how we work and live but also how we define our lifestyles and habits related to our kitchen practices and cooking habits? We will focus on the material artefacts and kitchen design, exploring various household practices of storage, preservation and cooking patterns as well as the technological relationships to kitchen inventories and machines. Regarding the social functions of the kitchen, we will also analyze gender roles influenced by kitchen geographies that range between living- and workspace.
Cultural Anthropology at JGU Mainz offers a seminar entirely taught in English for the first time. Its aim is to enhance the students’ abilities to act and communicate professionally in an international research and/or business environment. International exchange students are very welcome. Impulses and inspirations for this course topic derive from the SIEF congress 2017 with its panel “Kitchen Stories” (Köstlin/Bardone/Jönsson). Accordingly, we will focus on recent publications of our field of interest within a cross-cultural context. All text readings, seminar sessions and student presentations will be in English. However, it is up to the students’ choice to write the seminar papers in German.
